As early as 1885 – in the Meiji era – the Tsuchiya family (now Kida) founded this estate in the town of Fuefuki in Yamanashi. Family-owned and in continuous operation for over 130 years, Lumière has significantly shaped the history of Japanese viticulture. It was one of the first wineries to vinify "Western wine" following classical models. By 1918, Lumière (then still called "Koshu-en") received the title of Purveyor to the Imperial Household of Japan – an early sign of its prestige. In the 1960s, Lumière began entering wines in international competitions, and since 1967, the estate has regularly won medals at renowned European wine awards. These successes further drove the focus on quality: Under President Toshihiko Tsukamoto (from 1976), cellar technology was modernized. In 1992, the final renaming to "Lumière" took place as an expression of a guiding light for viticulture in Japan. The winery considers it its mission to produce "real wine from real grapes" from Japanese terroir.

KAKITSUBATA (750ml) delights with a creamy perlage and aromas of ripe apple fruit and fine toasty notes. Situated in the fruit-growing municipality of Takahata, famous for grapes, apples, and pears, the winery has quickly developed into the figurehead of Japanese viticulture in Tōhoku. The landscape is characterized by a basin surrounded by the foothills of several mountain ranges, earning Takahata the nickname "Mahoroba no Sato" – roughly translated as "blessed, fertile village." The terroir is indeed special: Alluvial soils from several rivers and deposits from a former sea inlet produce lime- and mineral-rich earth. Pieces of the characteristic Takahata stone, a zeolite-containing tuff with excellent retention and drainage capabilities, can be found throughout the vineyards. This rock enriches the soil with minerals and acts as a natural buffer, allowing the vines to grow healthily and produce concentrated berries. The climate in Takahata is temperate-continental: From April to October (the growing season), there is relatively little precipitation at approx. 800 mm, and in summer, there is daytime warmth which, however, cools down sharply at night. In winter, however, snowfall of over one meter ensures natural vine dormancy and enrichment of the soil with meltwater.

Prise de Mousse Chardonnay 2017 (750 ml) is an elegant sparkling wine with complex aromas of grapefruit, lemon, white flowers, banana, and brioche. Marufuji made a name for itself early on by vinifying dry, European-style wines contrary to the trends of the time, when sweet fortified wines prevailed in Japan. This pioneering role is reflected in its history spanning over 130 years: Since the 1950s, the winery has marketed its products under the poetic name "Rubaiyat," inspired by the Persian poetry collection of the same name. Today, "Rubaiyat" is synonymous with the highest quality from Katsunuma. The connection between old and new can also be felt in the architecture: The winery resides in a magnificent, traditional Japanese farmhouse overlooking the valley, but houses state-of-the-art cellar technology inside. Marufuji does not view other winemakers in the region as competitors, but as a community—it is committed to establishing Katsunuma as a vibrant wine region with many individual wineries.
