As early as 1885 – in the Meiji era – the Tsuchiya family (now Kida) founded this estate in the town of Fuefuki in Yamanashi. Family-owned and in continuous operation for over 130 years, Lumière has significantly shaped the history of Japanese viticulture. It was one of the first wineries to vinify "Western wine" following classical models. By 1918, Lumière (then still called "Koshu-en") received the title of Purveyor to the Imperial Household of Japan – an early sign of its prestige. In the 1960s, Lumière began entering wines in international competitions, and since 1967, the estate has regularly won medals at renowned European wine awards. These successes further drove the focus on quality: Under President Toshihiko Tsukamoto (from 1976), cellar technology was modernized. In 1992, the final renaming to "Lumière" took place as an expression of a guiding light for viticulture in Japan. The winery considers it its mission to produce "real wine from real grapes" from Japanese terroir.
