Marufuji

Marufuji Winery: Founded in 1890 by Jisaku Ōmura in the garden of his home, it is today managed by the fourth generation of the Ōmura family. Marufuji made a name for itself early on by vinifying dry, European-style wines contrary to the trends of the time, when sweet fortified wines prevailed in Japan. This pioneering role is reflected in its history spanning over 130 years: Since the 1950s, the winery has marketed its products under the poetic name "Rubaiyat," inspired by the Persian poetry collection of the same name. Today, "Rubaiyat" is synonymous with the highest quality from Katsunuma. The connection between old and new can also be felt in the architecture: The winery resides in a magnificent, traditional Japanese farmhouse overlooking the valley, but houses state-of-the-art cellar technology inside. Marufuji does not view other winemakers in the region as competitors, but as a community—it is committed to establishing Katsunuma as a vibrant wine region with many individual wineries. This regional responsibility and the focus on grapes grown in Japan distinguish Marufuji as one of the leading wineries in the Katsunuma region.

Petit Domaine Rubaiyat 2021 (750 ml) is a masterful blend of the Bordeaux grape varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. The wine has a subtle scent of ripe fruit, toasted notes, and a hint of forest floor. On the palate, it is supple and well-balanced—with an expressive taste and a long finish reminiscent of dark chocolate.

Rubaiyat Chardonnay 2022 (750 ml) was fermented in oak barrels and matured for six months sur lie with bâtonnage. The use of wild yeasts creates a complex aroma of pear and pineapple, accompanied by notes of butter, nuts, and toasted bread. The fresh and fruit-forward taste gives the wine an elegant and appealing note.
