Discover Japan in a glass

A wine journey becomes personal when a second glass changes your first impression. Start with two wines that share something: the grape, the region or the producer. Keep the other details in view and you will begin to recognise the choices described in this guide.

One grape variety, several expressions

Kōshū is a rewarding starting point. Compare a still wine with a sparkling interpretation, or wines from two producers. Notice fragrance, acidity, texture and the finish. A variety gives you a point of reference; it does not make every bottle taste alike. Our Kōshū set brings different interpretations together, with the exact wines described on the product page.

Let the food have a say

We like to explore delicate dishes with lighter wines: vegetables with citrus, steamed fish or tofu with herbs offer possible starting points. For a fuller red, try grilled mushrooms, roasted vegetables or a gently seasoned meat dish. These are invitations to experiment. Sauce, sweetness, salt, heat and preparation matter as much as the main ingredient.

Japanese wine also belongs at a European table. A wine need not come from the same country as the food. Try a familiar dish and change the wine: the contrast often tells you more than an elaborate tasting vocabulary.

Find your own favourite

Pour modest tasting portions into similar glasses, taste first without food and then with a bite. Give the wine a little time and follow the producer’s serving recommendations. Write down one thing you enjoy rather than searching for the “correct” aroma. If you are choosing for a dinner, a gift or your first Japanese wine evening, tell us what you enjoy. We will help you find an appropriate starting point.
